From September 26th to 28th, 2023, a remarkable gathering of experts and enthusiasts convened at the University of Hohenheim to explore and share the latest in Precision Agriculture (PA). Titled “The road of PA towards a site-specific weed management”, the workshop was a hub of innovation, discussion, and collaboration. The event kicked off on the evening of September 25th with a relaxed gathering at a castle, setting the tone for an open exchange of ideas. Over the course of the three-day workshop, participants delved deep into a comprehensive scientific program. This program touched upon various facets of PA, including site-specific weed management, the integration of smart & digital solutions, machinery & equipment insights, and non-chemical tools. A keen focus was also given to environmental monitoring with both remote and proximal sensing and the application of robotics and associated technologies in PA. A highlight for many was the interactive focus group discussion on the first day, shedding light on new EU rules regarding PA. This generated rich dialogue, offering perspectives from various stakeholders in the industry. Another memorable moment was the field trip to Ihinger Hof research station on the second day. Attendees were given a firsthand look at the latest developments in PA, bringing theoretical discussions to life. The day concluded with a delightful group dinner at Restaurant Garbe Plieningen, allowing attendees to mingle and discuss the day’s learnings.
The workshop wrapped up on September 28th with a closing session summarizing the event’s outcomes and looking towards future initiatives and collaborations. The results from the various sensor comparisons conducted during the event showed potential as a foundation for future standardization, highlighting areas for growth in agriculture technology, particularly in the development of new sensors. It was evident that one of the workshop’s greatest strengths was its ability to foster new partnerships while building upon existing platforms’ experiences. The drive to share these results in research journals ensures that the knowledge gained will be disseminated to a wider audience. Kudos to the impeccable organization by the local organizers, Professor Dr. Roland Gerhards and Dr. Michael Spaeth. Dr. Dionisio Andújar, the Network’s leader, further provided leadership, with Dr. Gerasimos Peteinatos adeptly managing the workshop’s proceedings. Hosted at the Institute of Phytomedicine on Otto-Sander-Straße, the setting was ideal for this deep dive into the evolving world of PA. The call for participation was open to researchers beyond the existing network, signifying an inclusive approach to expanding the community and sharing knowledge.
Looking back, this workshop was not only an academic exercise but also a stepping stone towards a brighter, more efficient future for agriculture.
